Hot-button issues in performing Jewish music in Poland

Josh Horowitz and Cookie Segelstein, two of the three members of the band, performing violin and accordion music from their Polish klezmer CD. Brostoff will discuss with them unique features of Polish klezmer music. Veretski Pass has performed throughout Poland frequently. Josh Horowitz is an American television and podcast host, writer, author, producer, and actor. He is a host for MTV News, Comedy Central, and the podcast, Happy Sad Confused. He is best known for his memorably irreverent conversations with celebrities in a variety of shows and formats. He serves as a frequent moderator in New York and Los Angeles, and at events such as San Diego Comic-Con. Violin and violist, Cookie Segelstein, received her Master’s degree in Viola from The Yale School of Music in 1984. She was Principal Violist in Orchestra New England and Assistant Principal in the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, as well as on the music faculty at Southern Connecticut State University. She is the founder and director of Veretski Pass, a member of Budowitz, the Youngers of Zion with Henry Sapoznik, has performed with Kapelye, The Klezmatics, Frank London, Klezmer Fats and Swing with Pete Sokolow and the late Howie Leess, Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. She is also the publisher of “The Music of…” series of klezmer transcriptions. She is active as a Holocaust educator and curriculum advisor and serves on boards of both the North California Viola Society, and the American String Teacher Association, Bay Area chapter. Neal Brostof has recently returned from a very successful concert tour in Krakow and Kielce

Neal Brostoff: Polish Jewish Art Music

Klezmer music has dominated the conversations about the post-communist Jewish culture renaissance in Poland.

However, creative activity in art music (classical music) has its own proud history, beginning with the virtuoso pianist and composer Maria Szymanowska in the late 18th century We will listen to one of her nocturnes, which strongly influenced Frederic Chopin’s compositional style. The webinar will offer an overview of primarily 20th century music of the Polish-Jewish experience, including the work of Krzysztof Penderecki (not Jewish) whose powerful Kaddish Oratorio concludes with the version of the Kaddish prayer sung at the High Holydays morning services. Szymon Laks survived Auschwitz, where he conducted the inmates’ orchestra. We will learn about his haunting art song on the poem of Antoni Slonimski, Elegy for the Lost Jewish Villages.

The program’s presenter, Neal Brostoff, taught courses in Jewish and Israeli music history and Jewish music performance in UCLA’s Departments of Ethnomusicology and Musicology from 2011 to 2016. Mr. Brostoff has also served as the music programs coordinator for the Mickey Katz Endowed Chair in Jewish Music at UCLA. He has taught Jewish music courses at Loyola Marymount University and at American Jewish University in Los Angeles. In his professional career, Mr. Brostoff has produced Jewish music concerts and festivals and has lectured on Jewish music topics. He has also served as director of cultural affairs for the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles and as a music specialist at the Skirball Cultural Center. Active as a cantorial accompanist and choir director, Mr. Brostoff served congregations Adat Ari El and Temple Aliyah in Los Angeles from 1971 to 2007. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Mount St. Mary’s College and California State University, Fullerton.

Eliyana Adler „Survival on the Margins: Polish Jewish Refugees in the Wartime Soviet Union”

The implementation of the August 1939 accord between Germany and the Soviet Union (Molotov-Ribbentrop) erased Poland. The Jews in the Soviet controlled sector of the former Poland, many of whom fled eastward or were deported by Soviet authorities or simply exiled to vast howling regions found a paradoxical refuge. They were at a far remove from unfolding persecutions and murders the Germans planed. The narrative about the fate of the 200,000 Polish Jewish refugees in the Soviet Union remained peripheral to the study of the Holocaust for over 75 years. Dr. Adler’s ground breaking work has opened up these areas of study for the English speaking audiences.

In the Soviet Union, refuge was an arduous path including meager food, hard labor, freezing temperatures, illness, inadequate shelter, and the Soviet system – all, were a tortuous obstacles to survival. Initially Jewish Poles were designate to the Artic regions – “Siberia” and later, other locations in central Asia. After the war, they were allowed to return to Poland, where they discovered the full extent of the Holocaust’s destruction. By 1946, these Jewish Poles were the majority in the Displaced Persons camps established in Germany. Their story was subsumed into the main Holocaust narratives.

In a prescient supplementary essay What’s in a Name? How Titles Construct and Convey Knowledge about Migrants, Adler frames for us some of the difficulty and complexity facing those of us who seek to understand the circuitous paths of Polish Jewish Refugees. Dr. Adler remarks cross temporal boundaries to indirectly, comment on contemporary and historical constructs about migrants. Dr. Eliyana Adler’s ground breaking study employs the still meager Soviet era archival sources but foregrounds the recollections of survivors. Adler’s work confronts us with several questions: how we understand the Holocaust? What does it mean to be a survivor? We are left to understand and ponder the paradoxes of history.

Wprowadzenie w życie porozumienia z sierpnia 1939 roku pomiędzy Niemcami, a Związkiem Radzieckim (pakt Ribbentrop-Mołotow) wymazało Polskę z map Europy. Żydzi z kontrolowanej przez Sowietów części Polski, z których wielu uciekło na wschód lub zostało deportowanych przez władze sowieckie lub po prostu zesłanych do rozległych, niedostepnych regionów Syberii, znaleźli paradoksalne schronienie. Byli daleko od zaplanowanych przez Niemców prześladowań i mordów. Narracja o losie 200 tysiącach polskich uchodźców żydowskich w Związku Sowieckim przez ponad 75 lat pozostawała na marginesie badań nad Holokaustem. Przełomowa praca dr Eliyany Adler otworzyła te obszary nauki dla anglojęzycznych odbiorców.

W Związku Radzieckim schronienie okazało się również trudną ścieżką, obejmującą skąpe jedzenie, ciężką pracę, mróz, choroby, nieodpowiednie schronienie, do tego sam w sobie sowiecki system – wszystko to stanowiło krętą przeszkodę w przetrwaniu. Początkowo żydowscy Polacy byli przwożeni do regionów arktycznych – Syberii, później do innych lokalizacji w Azji Środkowej. Po wojnie pozwolono im wrócić do Polski, gdzie odkryli pełny zakres zniszczeń Holokaustu. W 1946 ci żydowscy Polacy stanowili większość w obozach „Displaced Persons” utworzonych w Niemczech. Ich historia została włączona do głównych narracji o Holokauście.

W proroczym eseju uzupełniającym „What’s in a Name? How Titles Construct and Convey Knowledge about Migrants”, dr Eliyana Adler przedstawia nam trudności i złożoność, z jakimi borykają się ci z nas, którzy starają się zrozumieć okrężne, powrotne ścieżki polskich żydowskich uchodźców. about to be published in Polish. This project is an opening to people curious about modern Judaism
both its merits and its struggles.

About the speakers:
Rabbi Walter Rothschild has vast experience in teaching Judaism in the European context and has
served as visiting rabbi for Beit Polska and many other communities. About the book and about

Rabbi Alan Iser is a lecturer in religious studies and theology at several Catholic seminaries in

Among the Remnants: Josh Gortler’s Journey

Peering out at us on the cover of the memoir ’Among the Remnants: Josh Gortler’s Journey’ is a three-year-old child who survived a trek through wartime Siberia and back to Poland, the country that had been his home, but was now a place of danger. Josh’s journey takes us through post-war Poland’s upheavals and his years of a belated, distorted childhood among Jewish displaced persons (DPs) in Germany, and then to a new life in a strange country, Phoenix, Arizona USA. Josh and the writer Gigi Yellen (of Northwest Public Broadcasting) answered the call of reckoning with the gift and burden of survival, working on the book for three years. Josh Gortler went on to become a leader in the field of social work in service to the elderly, based at the Seattle Jewish community’s world-renowned Kline Galland Home. Now retired, Josh Gortler speaks to schools and inspires leaders. Joanna Michlic, a renowned scholar of great breadth, will join the conversation around an aspect of her work with the narrative experiences of child survivors of the Holocaust.

History on Trial & Historians Tested – Can Governments Re-write History?

A key aspect of Jan Grabowski’s work focuses on the fate of Jews (circa 1943-44) attempting to elude the Germans. The Russian westward advance against the Germans was a looming force. The German’s dissolution of the large ghettoes and forced labor camps was beginning. Many Jews sought to hide in forests or with farmers. Jews struggled to survive. Grabowski asks what was the role of local Polish mayors, fire departments, vigilante bounty hunters, and the Blue Police (Granatowa policja)? How did Polish society especially in the country-side view what was happening to their Jewish fellow citizens? In the magisterial 1700 page study “Night Without End: The Fate of Jews in Selected Counties of Occupied Poland” Jan Grabowski and Barbara Engelking with other Polish historians report on this question. Their micro-history has been acclaimed. Upon the book’s publication, Jan Grabowski and Barbara Engelking were sued in Polish court for defaming an individual mayor. Dr. Grabowski will talk about the book and the trial.
